In gravure printing, volcanoes are tiny ring-shaped defects that appear in the printed area. They look like small craters or “volcano-shaped” spots: the center of the dot is missing ink, but there is a ring of ink around the outside.
Causes (C) and Solutions (S) of Volcanoes
Printing Cylinder Issues
C: The engraved area is too deep
S: Reduce the depth of the engraved area
Ink Issues
C: Fast evaporating solvents cause ink to dry on the surface before it can properly level out.
S: Switch to slower-drying agent
