In flexographic printing, the halo effect is a defect where the edges of printed images or text appear fuzzy or outlined.
Causes (C) and Solutions (S) of Halo Effect
Printing Plate Problems
C: Excessive pressure between the plate and substrate
S: Adjust the pressure to just-touching (or kissprint)
C: The printing plate is too thick or has worn off (becoming too hard)
S: Change the plate
Ink Properties
C: high viscosity ink
S: Reduce viscosity with water or a proper solvent
Other Factors
C: Sticky-back is too hard
S: Change to a soft cushion sticky-back
C: Poorly finished or damaged impression cylinder
S: Remove small burrs by professional polishing if possible
